Is there a quick an easy way to make sure my tyres are correctly inflated and in good condition?

The quickest, easiest way to check your tyres is to call into an Advantage Tyres store for a free Tyre Safety Check. One of our friendly staff members will check your tyre tread depth and condition for any signs of irregular wear. They will check the sidewall for nicks, scrapes, bulges or damage and they will also check the tyres are correctly inflated and adjust if required. Your tyres should be checked at least once a month.

What is Advantage Tyres' recommendation for tread depth?

The minimum legal limit in New Zealand is 1.5mm across the middle 75% of the tyre at any point. Anything below this limit and you are driving on illegal tyres. We recommend that you change your tyres when they reach 3mm tread depth. Tyres below the 3mm recommendation are worn by up to 78% and will greatly affect the overall braking and cornering performance of your vehicle.

Tyres below a tread depth of 3mm are also affected by an increased risk of aquaplaning when driving on wet roads. This is when a wedge of water is formed between the road and the tyre and means the tyre loses contact completely with the road surface so that neither the vehicle’s steering or brakes can be properly applied.

What is the appropriate tyre pressure for my car?

Proper inflation is the single most important part of tyre care. The inflation pressure on the side of the tyre is the maximum operating pressure. It is not necessarily the right inflation for your vehicle. Always use the inflation recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. You can find it in your owner’s manual, posted on the edge of the driver’s door, on a door post or on the inside of the glove box door.

Also, don’t forget to check the spare. Your Advantage Tyres dealer can answer any questions you may have about tyre inflation.

How many kilometres will I get out of my tyres?

Many factors can affect the tread life of your tyres, such as:

  • Tread compounds
  • Construction features
  • Vehicle application
  • Tyre maintenance
  • Geographic conditions
  • Atmospheric conditions
  • Driving habits

That’s why exact mileage is impossible to predict. Take special care when braking, accelerating and cornering, etc., to help increase the life of the tyre. Choosing tyres that are suitable for the application and utilising the latest technology will help too. If you have concerns about the rate of wear on your tyres, consult your local Advantage Tyres dealer.
